Spiritual devotions are said to be the hallmark of our Catholic tradition. They are a significant aspect of our Dominican tradition as well. In this issue we highlight a number of prayerful practices that give life to our mission of preaching the Word of God. These forms of prayer are as varied as our diverse personalities. Each Sister has her own unique way of being in relationship with the Holy One.
Sister Marielle [Schmitt, OP] speaks of her dedication to the Blessed Sacrament. Sister Patty [Gallagher, OP] and others tell of how the rosary has influenced their religious life. Sister Toni [Harris, OP] describes how the Seven Sorrows of Mary can be reframed in the context of our contemporary world.
Many of our readers are familiar with the Prayer for the Beatification of Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli. Eileen [Dushek-Manthe] outlines for us the history of this beautiful prayer that has drawn so many people to him in asking for his intercession.
As always, Sister Clare [Wagner, OP] gifts us with her enthusiastic review of three books that promise spiritual nourishment, “the call to a new kind of ‘devotion’ or new attention and awareness when practicing spiritual devotions—or a little bit of both.”
We invite you to settle in and enjoy this journey into the hearts and minds of these holy women as you reflect on your own devotional history. What devotions draw you to God and nurture your prayer?
