New UN NGO Rep
The executive committee of the Dominican Leadership Conference (DLC) announced Margaret Mayce, OP (Amityville), will become the new non-governmental organization (NGO) representative at the United Nations (UN) in New York. Her service began Aug. 15. Margaret replaces Eileen Gannon, OP (Sparkill), who has served in this position for 10 years and was the first Dominican representative at the UN.
The Dominican Order at the UN has addressed issues and spoken to particular policies through the Commission on Economic and Social Development. The NGO rep addresses a number of compelling issues with working groups on concerns such as Iraq, the conflict between Israel and Palestine, HIV/AIDS migration, the status of girls (primarily education and poverty issues), and social development.
